Winifred Holtby
Winifred Holtby (1898–1935) was an English novelist, journalist, and social reformer. Born in Rudston, Yorkshire, she studied at Somerville College, Oxford, and became associated with a generation of women writers between the wars. Holtby wrote fiction and non-fiction, contributing essays and reviews to periodicals while campaigning for women’s rights and social justice. Her work often explores class, politics, and the lives of women in provincial England. She is best known for *South Riding*, a wide-ranging portrait of a Yorkshire community, published posthumously in 1936. Holtby died in London at 37.
