Xenophon
Xenophon of Athens (c. 430–354 BCE) was an ancient Greek historian, soldier, and student of Socrates. He is best known for the *Anabasis*, an account of the march of Greek mercenaries—“the Ten Thousand”—after the failed expedition of Cyrus the Younger, in which Xenophon became one of the leaders. His *Memorabilia* preserves conversations and recollections of Socrates and offers a defense of his character. Xenophon also wrote works on Greek history, leadership, and practical subjects such as horsemanship and household management. His clear, direct prose made him influential as both a historian and a stylist.
