Yogi Berra
The son of Italian immigrants, Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra grew up in the predominantly Italian neighborhood of St. Louis called “The Hill.” Berra quit school after the eighth grade and began playing baseball in local American Legion leagues, earning the reputation for being an amazing catcher. Berra received his nickname from a friend who said he resembled a Hindu yogi because of the way he sat with his legs crossed when waiting to bat. In his professional career, Berra played for the New York Yankees, later managing the team. He appeared in 14 World Series, winning 10 of them, among many other career accomplishments. Berra is also known for his witticisms, known as Yogiisms.
