[A conductor’s] happiness does not come from only his own story and his joy of the music. The joy is about enabling other people’s stories to be heard at the same time.

Additional Information:

This quote by Israeli conductor Itay Talgam means that the joy of being a conductor (of an orchestra) comes not only from the conductor’s own personal enjoyment of the music and how it allows him to express himself, but also from his ability to allow other people’s emotions and life stories to find expression through the music. In other words, the conductor gives a voice to the orchestra members, the audience, and the composer, and this brings him fulfillment. The quote is from Talgam’s 2009 TED Talk about the great 20th-century conductors.
