Look into your own heart, discover what it is that gives you pain and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever, to inflict that pain on anybody else.

Additional Information:

This quote is religious historian Karen Armstrong’s definition of the Golden Rule, a key teaching of all the world’s major religions: not only should we treat others how we want to be treated, but we should also make sure not to inflict pain on others that we would not want inflicted upon ourselves. In other words, we must practice empathy. In the TEDTalk in which she gave this quote, Armstrong goes on to explain the importance of the Golden Rule and why we desperately need to implement it on a global basis.
