This saying is attributed to Hillel the Elder (late 1st century BCE–early 1st century CE), a leading Pharisaic sage and teacher in Jerusalem whose maxims were preserved in rabbinic literature. It belongs to a cluster of aphorisms in Pirkei Avot (“Ethics of the Fathers”), a tractate of the Mishnah devoted to moral instruction rather than legal rulings. In that setting, the line functions as practical wisdom for students and householders: bodily indulgence and the accumulation of wealth tend to bring not security but vulnerability—physical decay in the first case, and anxiety and responsibility in the second. The broader Avot passage strings together “the more X, the more Y” observations to caution against excess.

The proverb draws a parallel between the body and property. “More flesh” evokes overindulgence and the inevitability of mortality: the body’s increase ends in corruption (“worms”), a stark reminder that physical gratification is temporary. “More possessions” similarly undercuts the fantasy that wealth brings peace; it multiplies obligations, fear of loss, social entanglements, and moral risk. The point is not necessarily asceticism for its own sake, but proportion and perspective: invest in what endures (character, learning, good deeds) rather than in expansions that predictably generate new forms of trouble.
