Boorstin contrasts the exhilaration of new tools with their capacity to overwhelm human judgment. “Drown” suggests not mere distraction but a loss of orientation: technology can multiply signals faster than we can interpret them. The “fog of information” image implies opacity—an environment where sheer volume and speed make it harder to see what matters. In that haze, “knowledge” (understanding, context, and tested meaning) is displaced by undigested data. The warning is not anti-technology so much as epistemic: without habits of selection, verification, and synthesis, information abundance can erode wisdom and civic discernment.
