We are volcanoes. When we women offer our experience as our truth, as human truth, all the maps change. There are new mountains.

Le Guin frames women’s lived experience as a force as disruptive and generative as volcanism: long-contained pressure that, when expressed, reshapes the landscape. The “maps” are cultural narratives—history, literature, philosophy, and social “common sense”—that have often treated male experience as the default human norm. When women speak from their own authority (“our experience as our truth”) and insist it counts as “human truth,” the conceptual geography must be redrawn. The image of “new mountains” suggests not only upheaval but creation: new categories, stories, and ethical priorities become visible, permanently altering what society recognizes as real and important.
