Interpretation
Read as an observation about gendered expectations, the line suggests that women’s perceived “transgressions” are judged more harshly than men’s. Men are often granted cultural narratives of excusability—youthful folly, ambition, sexual license, or “boys will be boys”—that make forgiveness socially easier. Women, by contrast, are frequently measured against ideals of purity, loyalty, and selflessness; when they violate these norms, the breach can feel like a deeper betrayal of what they are “supposed” to be. The aphorism also hints at internalized misogyny: women may be taught to police other women more strictly, making forgiveness harder within female relationships as well as across genders.
