About This Quote
This quote needs no introduction—at least for now. We're working on adding more context soon.
Interpretation
The phrase is typically used (often wryly) to describe something that looks auspicious at first—suggesting glamour, novelty, or opportunity associated with “the East”—but whose promise may be vague, exaggerated, or ultimately unfulfilled. “Eastern” can evoke the sunrise (a new day, beginnings) as well as cultural stereotypes of exoticism and wealth. In modern usage it often functions as a set expression for optimistic potential, sometimes with an undertone of skepticism: the promise is present, but not yet proven by results.
