The line contrasts public, ceremonial religiosity with lived ethical practice. It laments that many people enthusiastically commemorate the anniversary of Jesus’s birth—an outward, socially reinforced observance—while comparatively few follow the harder, daily demands of Jesus’s teachings (charity, humility, forgiveness, justice). Read as a moral critique, it targets hypocrisy and the substitution of ritual for conduct. Attributed to Franklin, it also fits an Enlightenment-inflected emphasis on practical virtue over sectarian display: religion’s value is measured by behavior rather than celebration. The aphoristic parallelism (“How many… How few…”) sharpens the rebuke by making the imbalance feel obvious and shameful.
