There is nothing that gives more assurance than a mask.

Interpretation
Colette’s aphorism points to the paradox that concealment can produce confidence. A “mask” may be literal (costume, makeup, a social role) or figurative (a cultivated persona), but in either case it creates distance between the self and the gaze of others. That distance can reduce vulnerability: if one is judged, it is the mask that is judged, not the exposed inner self. The line also hints at performance as a form of freedom—by adopting a role, a person may act more boldly, speak more frankly, or explore desires and identities that feel risky when unguarded. Colette thus links assurance not to authenticity alone, but to the protective power of artifice.
