Interpretation
In Rumi’s imagery, trees and gardens often stand for the soul’s life in the presence of the Divine. A cypress—traditionally associated with uprightness and dignity—“turning green” suggests a sudden quickening or renewal, as if spiritual vitality is rising through it. “Drunk with the forest” draws on the Sufi trope of intoxication: not literal wine, but ecstatic absorption in a larger reality. The line implies that individual being (the single tree) is transformed by immersion in the greater whole (the forest), hinting that awakening comes through participation, love, and surrender rather than isolated self-control.
