Quote #129760
God punishes us mildly by ignoring our prayers and severely by answering them.

Interpretation
The aphorism reverses the usual assumption that answered prayers are unambiguously good. It suggests that human desire is often shortsighted: what we ask for may gratify immediate wants while harming us morally, spiritually, or practically. In that sense, divine “silence” can be a form of mercy—protecting us from the consequences of our own misjudgment—whereas granting the request can become a harsher lesson, forcing us to live with what we thought we wanted. The line also functions as a critique of transactional religion, implying that prayer is not a mechanism for getting outcomes but a practice that should reshape the petitioner’s will and understanding.
