Interpretation
In Adorno’s aesthetic theory, modern art is compelled to respond to a fractured social reality—one marked by domination, commodification, and the aftershocks of historical catastrophe. Read in that light, “bringing chaos into order” does not mean smoothing over disorder with comforting harmony; it names art’s difficult labor of giving form to what resists form. Art organizes dissonance, suffering, and contradiction into a work that can be apprehended without being falsified. The “order” achieved is therefore critical rather than reconciliatory: by shaping chaos, the artwork makes chaos legible and confronts audiences with what society would prefer to repress.
