Interpretation
Desmoulins wryly measures his own life against two emblematic “thirty-three”s: Jesus, traditionally believed to have died at that age, and the revolutionary martyr. By calling Jesus a “good sans-culotte,” he provocatively recasts Christian sacrifice in the idiom of popular revolution, implying that the Revolution has its own saints and crucifixions. The second clause—“an age fatal to revolutionists”—turns the joke into foreboding: the revolutionary who helps unleash political violence may himself be consumed by it. The line captures the self-awareness and fatalism of a man who had become uneasy with the Terror and sensed that revolutionary purity tests often end in the execution of yesterday’s heroes.
