Quote #129358
Full nakedness! All joyes are due to thee,
As souls unbodied, bodies uncloth'd must be,
To taste whole joyes.
John Donne

Interpretation
In these lines Donne links physical undressing with a metaphysical claim about “whole” joy: complete pleasure requires complete exposure. The conceit turns on a parallel between body and soul—just as souls, freed from bodies, might experience unmediated spiritual bliss, so bodies “uncloth’d” can experience unimpeded sensual delight. The exclamation “Full nakedness!” reads as both erotic invitation and philosophical assertion, characteristic of Donne’s love poetry, where bodily intimacy becomes a vehicle for arguing about knowledge, truth, and completeness. The passage suggests that partial concealment yields partial experience; only total vulnerability—literal and figurative—permits total union and joy.
