Love consists of this: two solitudes that meet, protect and greet each other.

This line is widely attributed to Rainer Maria Rilke and is generally traced to his reflections on love in his correspondence, especially the letters later collected as *Briefe an einen jungen Dichter* (*Letters to a Young Poet*). In those letters (written 1903–1908), Rilke advises a younger writer on artistic development and, in passing, offers a demanding view of love: not fusion or possession, but a relationship that preserves each person’s inner life. The “two solitudes” formulation aligns with Rilke’s broader insistence on solitude as the condition for genuine creativity and mature intimacy.

Rilke defines love not as merger or possession but as an encounter between two intact inner worlds. “Two solitudes” suggests that each person remains fundamentally alone—responsible for their own growth, fears, and meaning—yet love becomes possible when those solitudes can approach without violating one another. To “meet, protect and greet” frames intimacy as mutual recognition and care: partners create a space where the other’s inwardness is honored rather than consumed. The significance is ethical as much as emotional: love is measured by the capacity to preserve the other’s freedom and interior life while still offering presence and shelter.
