Poesy engraved on the ring
Love engraved on my heart.

Interpretation
The couplet contrasts two kinds of inscription: the outward, crafted mark (“poesy” engraved on a ring) and the inward, lived mark (“love” engraved on the heart). A ring suggests a public token—gift, vow, or emblem—whose words can be chosen, polished, and displayed. The heart’s engraving implies something deeper and less controllable: love as an experience that leaves a permanent trace on identity and memory. The parallel structure turns the lines into a miniature epigram, implying that art and ornament can signify devotion, but the truer record is internal. “Poesy” also hints that poetry itself functions like jewelry: small, portable language meant to be carried close.
