Interpretation
The saying expresses a core Daoist ethic: easeful self-sufficiency (being “simply yourself”) and freedom from rivalry. In the Dao De Jing, striving, comparison, and competitive display are treated as distortions that pull a person away from the Dao’s natural course (ziran). By relinquishing status-seeking and measuring oneself against others, one becomes less reactive and more steady, which can paradoxically attract trust and deference. “Respect” here is not demanded or performed; it arises indirectly when a person is unforced, unpretentious, and not trying to dominate. The quote thus frames social esteem as a byproduct of non-contention rather than an achievement to be chased.
